Before you move a wall, exhaust what furnishing can do. In our experience, most rooms that feel wrong are not badly built — they are badly scaled and badly lit.
Start with the rug. An undersized rug shrinks a room more effectively than almost any other single object. Front legs of the seating should land on it, at minimum.
Then add light at three heights: overhead, table and floor. A room lit from the ceiling alone will read flat at every hour of the day.
Finally, commit to texture over pattern. Bouclé, tweed, leather, shearling and raw wood give a neutral scheme the depth that people read as expensive — and none of it requires a permit.
